„(…) I just want to say thank you, HVALA SVIMA. It is a great honor as a foreigner to be asked to speak at any HURID event; this is special. Like all great ideas,it is simple: members talking to members, close to home. I am honoured to be on the same stage as Professors Ljubešić and Ivšac-Pavliša, a great example of teamwork for YEARS. (…)
Often, in Canada, we drive a long way to conferences with our colleagues and come home thinking, “That was very expensive, and useless.” We never have enough opportunity or time to talk to our close colleagues, whatever the profession. Tonight is free, and you came here to be with colleagues. Thank you for coming. You can tell me later if it was OK. Probably I will be in Čingač with a Velebitsko.
My best times in Canada are regional “Share–Ins”, where we come together as colleagues for one day and finally have time to share new ideas, materials and information with each other, member to member, just like here. We have enough experts of our own. So do you. Our association rents a room, we bring ‘pot luck’ lunch, and ‘round-table’ with colleagues. My Vancouver Island region is as big as Croatia, north to south.
I hope you have many more Member to Member events. We all learn so much from each other in life, and I hope you find a few ideas in my talk tonight. I am no Expensive Expert, just a volunteer member of HURID who comes to share experience and help children. Our work is vital, and it goes better if we understand each other and each other’s perspective, expertise and personality. My thanks to Jasmina for saving you all from my terrible Croatian. I suggested that I speak bad Croatian and she translates into better Croatian, but somebody told me you have had enough of that already.“
